MusiCounts celebrated an amazing 2019 JUNO Week in London, ON filled with exciting events and initiatives. The week saw MusiCounts honour the 2019 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award recipient, Kim Hastings and MusiCounts Inspired Minds Ambassador recipients, Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn and celebrate the MusiCounts TD Community Music Program with a $25,000 instrument grant to London Girls Rock Camp. The week culminated in a special JUNO Awards broadcast moment with host Sarah McLachlan and MusiCounts TD Community Music Program recipient, Meriel Reed. Plus, throughout the week there were many successful events in support of MusiCounts including JUNO Cup, JUNO Cup Jam, JUNO Stories from the Studio and JUNO Songwriters’ Circle.

MusiCounts extends a very special thank you to the London JUNOS Host Committee, City of London, participating venues and local concert goers. In the lead up to JUNO Week $1 per ticket from select shows at London Music Hall, Budweiser Gardens and Centennial Hall was donated to MusiCounts. Additionally, the JUNO Awards partnered with the City of London, and $1 from every broadcast ticket was donated to MusiCounts. Thanks to this generosity, over $130,000 has been raised for MusiCounts, which will help ensure that children across Canada have access to musical instruments.

MUSICOUNTS JUNO WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

MusiCounts kicked off JUNO Week by awarding local community organization, London Girls Rock Camp with $25,000 in musical instruments and equipment via the MusiCounts TD Community Music Program. On Friday March 15, London Girls Rock Camp performed in the TD Green Room, demonstrating that even in just a week, the new instruments can make a big impact.  Then, on the JUNO Awards broadcast London Girls Rock Camp member, Meriel Reed joined JUNO Awards host Sarah McLachlan to speak about how music adds possibilities for youth and the impact of MusiCounts’ $25k community instrument grant to London Girls Rock Camp, followed by a Sarah McLachlan performance with London Girls Rock Camp moving photos as a backdrop. MusiCounts was thrilled to recognize Kim Hastings from Pioneer Middle School in Rocky Mountain House, AB as the 2019 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year! Kim was honoured at the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards by award winning artist & author Jann Arden. Congratulations Kim! In February, Kim was surprised in her classroom MusiCounts, current and former students, colleagues, friends and family. MusiCounts was also pleased to honour Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn are the 2019 recipients of the MusiCounts Inspired Minds Ambassador Award, presented by The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation at the JUNO Chair’s Reception. The award recognizes individuals who have had an extraordinary impact on music education and MusiCounts over the course of its history. In 2016, Linda and Stephen made an extraordinary pledge of $500,000 in matching funds to the MusiCounts Band Aid Program. Due to their long-standing history with the charity, they recognized that MusiCounts has the power to continue to change the landscape of music education for children across Canada and wanted to inspire others to be involved.
